Maori Participation in the Auckland and New Zealand Economies

Client: Te Puni Kokiri

Date: May 2008

Authors: Dr Ganesh Nana, Kel Sanderson

This report summarises the derivation of, and findings from, a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for the New Zealand economy for the 2005/06 year. In particular, the SAM constructed for this report separately identifies the participation of the Maori households sector and the Maori producer enterprises sector. It also provides figures on participation in the core components of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In addition, the project developed a companion SAM that disaggregates the national transactions and flows into those related to the Auckland region.

A SAM is a combination of an inter-industry transactions (or input-output) table and the accounting flows of income and outlays for particular institutional sectors of an economy.
