Changes in household income and expenditure 1998 to 2007

Client: Privately commissioned

Date: June 2008

Authors: David Norman, Dr Ganesh Nana, Jason Leung-Wai, Kel Sanderson

This report compared changes in household income and spending over the nine years to 2007. It examined the increase in income for a “typical” New Zealand household, including where it sourced its income (family support / working for families, accommodation supplements, wages and salaries, or self-employment income). It also looked at the effect of bracket creep on disposable income, the role of rising house prices and interest rates on cash savings, and changes in spending behaviour.
