BERL’s forecasting service provides subscribers with a detailed assessment of the performance of the New Zealand economy and prospects for the near-term horizon. Quarterly forecasts, ranging over the coming three years, are provided for the following measures:

• employment, unemployment and migration flows  
• production and GDP by industry (including the retail sector and construction) 
• GDP by expenditure 
• export receipts, import payments and trade balances (including services trade, e.g. tourism and education) 
• interest rates and exchange rates 
• consumer price inflation and wages and other costs 
• government revenue, payments and balance.

Alongside these forecasts, we issue commentary and interpretation for the short-term business environment set against the medium-term horizon. Included in these assessments are appraisals of likely global influences and the trading environment facing New Zealand over the medium-term along with a consideration of any changes in government spending and taxation policy.

Four Forecasts are issued to subscribers every year - March, June, September and December. In the intervening months (excluding January), subscribers also receive a Monthly Monitor, which is a brief update commentary on recent events and issues. Soft copies of the publications are available by 4pm on the 15th (or next working day) of the month. Hard copies are in subscribers' hands by the 20th.

Earlier versions of Forecasts and Monthly Monitors are available on our website.  Latest BERL Forecasts and Monthly Monitors are made available to subscribers in hard copy.  Electronic copies are placed on the website only when the next edition is released.

The BERL Forecasts database (in Excel spreadsheet format) contains numerous national and regional, historical and forecast, data series providing further detail on all figures and tables in the published quarterly document.  Subscribers can get the latest datasets (by contacting BERL), while earlier datasets are available on the website.
