The report looked at major industries in the region including dairy, mining and agriculture.

The section on Tourism provided an estimate of the contribution of tourism to regional employment, GDP and business units, as well as presenting changes in occupancy rates, guest nights and expenditures by domestic and international tourists.

The study also considered building and resource consents, as well as infrastructure such as ports, airports and highways.

The Employment and tertiary study unit looked at these two issues in greater detail, while the Housing section dealt with the change in capital value of properties in the region, as well as house sales and prices.
