Employment and Training in Horticulture 2005-2011

Client: Horticulture Industry Training Organisation

Date: June 2006

Author(s): Dr Ganesh Nana; Dr Nicola Chandler

This report was an update and extension of our previous work investigating the employment and training needs of the New Zealand horticulture industry. Interviews with industry participants and training providers yielded new information on the wide range of courses available. As before, the report found one of the critical unknowns is the rate of labour force turnover in the industry. As such, estimates of training requirements continued to be expressed as a range, rather than a forecast. The report further noted the on-going intense competition for labour across all areas of the New Zealand economy. Consequently, the horticulture industry will continue to be faced with pressures to attract and retain its workforce. In particular, existing and potential workforce members will face attractions elsewhere in other industries and/or in other countries.
