Employment Prospects and Training in Horticulture

Client: Horticulture Industry Training Organisation

Date: November 2004

Author(s): Dr Ganesh Nana; Mat Arcus

This report investigated the employment prospects and consequent training needs of the New Zealand horticulture industry for the 2003 to 2011 period.  The report found that the minimum full-time requirements to be trained at level 4 or above over this eight-year period ranged from an estimated 2,720 to 4,480 persons.  However, these projections were consistent with only maintaining the existing proportion of trained staff in the horticulture workforce.  The report noted that the proportion of trained staff would need to increase to support a thriving, dynamic industry and to provide attractive career paths to recruit and retain personnel.  Therefore, the report recommended that the Horticulture Industry Training Organisation aim to increase over the medium term the proportion of the horticulture workforce that is trained at level 4 and above.
