Client: Venture Taranaki

Date: April 2002

Author(s): Kel Sanderson; Mark Goodchild; Dr Ganesh Nana

Methanex is a global leader in methanol production and marketing with operating plants in North America, Chile and New Zealand. Methanex New Zealand operates two methanol plants (Motunui and Waitara in North Traranaki), and a port loading facility at Port Taranaki in New Plymouth. The two plants have a combined capacity of 2.4 million tonnes, with methanol production being exported throughout the Asia Pacific region. Methanex has a significant impact upon economic activity, and contributes to the strategic strengths of the Taranaki and New Zealand economies. This includes Methanex being a major source of market demand for gas, thus encouraging the continuation of oil and gas exploration in the Taranaki region.
