Economic Impact Assessment of Industrial Fires in New Zealand

Client: New Zealand Fire Service Commission

Date: January 2002

Author(s): Mark Goodchild; Dr Ganesh Nana; Kel Sanderson

This report assessed the economic cost of industrial fires in New Zealand. The report used NZFSC data on property loss with insurance claims data to arrive at an estimate of the direct and indirect economic costs of industrial fires. The cost of providing fire emergency services in readiness and response to industrial fires was also calculated, and included as an economic cost component. This research was able to calculate the cost of industrial fires in aggregate, as well as identify particular industries where these costs are most significant.
