Intergenerational and Interfamilial Transfers of Wealth and Housing

Client: Centre for Housing Research Aotearoa New Zealand

Date: March 2005

Author(s): Mathew Arcus and Ganesh Nana

This report was commissioned by the Centre for Housing Research, Aotearoa New Zealand (CHRANZ).  The report brings together current information and research on intergenerational and interfamilial transfers of wealth and housing.  The information from New Zealand and overseas is brought into a framework that allows a research programme to be developed.

The report is a scoping paper that focuses on private intergenerational and interfamilial transfers.  As a way forward, we recommend four housing research topic areas: developing and testing a New Zealand framework; priority data necessary for further work; investigation of the non-modal household; and establishing a modelling approach, adopting microsimulation techniques.
