The Social and Economic Contribution of Pan Pac to the Hawkes Bay Region
Client: Pan Pac Forest Products Limited Date: July 2005 Author(s): Mark Goodchild; Dr Ganesh Nana; Kel Sanderson
This report assess the contribution that Pan Pac makes to the Hawke’s Bay region. It was prepared to support Pan Pac’s application for a Negotiated Greenhouse Agreement (NGA) with the Government. Pan Pac’s economic contribution is measured in terms of employment, external trade, and Value Added (GDP). However, Pan Pac is also an integral component of the region’s forestry and wood processing sector, and its activities support the viability and sustainability of this sector in a number of ways. This includes the Pulp Division’s use of pulp logs, wood chips, and residuals in the production of pulp and the generation of energy for processing at the Whirinaki site. This increases the utilisation of the wood resource harvested in the region. Pan Pac’s social contribution includes financial donations to local charities, schools, sports clubs, and other organisations. From a broader perspective, Pan Pac provides a source of employment across many small settlements in the region, which in turn contributes to the sustainability of these settlements. Its operations are an important source of base load demand for some of the region’s core infrastructure assets. BERL#4400
