Manufacturing Multipliers and Interpretation

Client: Industry Capability Network

Date: June 2004

Author(s): Ganesh Nana

This report describes a selection of mutlipliers related to the New Zealand manufacturing sector.  This is partly an update of previous BERL reports for the former Industrial Supplies Office presenting some manufacturing import substitution multipliers.  Multipliers are, however, a much misunderstood and (in cases) misused tool, as their correct interpretation requires acknowledgement of the severely limiting assumptions that form the basis of their derivation.  This report details the most critical of these assumptions and provides examples of how multipliers should be interpreted.
