2003 Rhododendron Festival: Audience and Economic Impact

Client:  New Plymouth District Council; Taranaki Arts Festival Trust

Date:  December 2003

Author(s):  Jason Leung-Wai; Kel Sanderson

This report presents the findings from an audience and gardeners survey. In particular the report provides:

  • a profile of the Festival audience;
  • perceptions and issues around the Festival; and
  • the size and impact of the Festival on Taranaki.

To collect this information two surveys were run, one for the audience and one for the participating gardeners. Comments were also solicited from key stakeholders.  The information presented in this report should allow the NPDC and the TAFT, (and all participants) to gain an insight into the Festival’s:

  • audience and key markets;size and breadth;
  • performance and issues; and
  • operating environment.

and enable the NPDC, TAFT, and other stakeholders to identify areas for improvement and develop a strategy for the Festival going forward.
The report consisted of the collection, collation and descriptive analysis of information from the Festival audience, participants and key stakeholders. Separate surveys were undertaken for each. Information on visitor numbers and spend were gathered from the Tourism Research Council, and a web search was undertaken for garden events in New Zealand.
